Woodstoves provide an efficient heat source but keep in mind the unit requires regular inspections of the installation as well as maintenance and cleaning. Woodstoves have been linked to increased occurrences of house and chimney fires.

Things to look for when purchasing a wood stove

Look for a wood stove approved by the Underwriter Laboratory UL.

  • Check out the EPA website for a list of recommended woodstoves.
  • The woodstove should be in good condition and should not have any defects.

Installation & Use

  • Installation of a wood stove should be done by a professional.
  • Verify the installation follows the local building codes.
  • Woodstoves should have 36 inch clearance from combustible surfaces like furniture or curtains.
  • A chimney flue should be lined and in good condition with one attached heat source.
  • Vents should be as short as possible made up of heavy gauge stovepipe.
  • The vent needs an 18 inch clearance from any combustible surface.
  • There should be a non-combustible floor covering extending out to 6 – 12 inches on all sides.
  • The woodstove needs an 18 inch non-combustible clearing in the front.
  • Use seasoned wood and do not burn green wood because it does not burn efficiently and causes the buildup of creosote.
  • Wood should be burned in small hot fires.
  • Use clean newspaper and kindling to start a fire.
  • Do not use flammable substances or trash to start fires.
  • Dispose of the ashes in non-combustible containers and remove ashes from the house and place outside not in the garage or on a porch or deck.
  • Remember to have a fire extinguisher near the woodstove area.
  • Keep working smoke/carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

Cleaning

  • Clean the wood stove monthly to remove creosote build-up.
  • Chimneys should be brush cleaned at least once a year.

Fire

  • Alert people in the house to evacuate.
  • Immediately contact the fire department.
  • Upon leaving if possible close the stove damper.

Concerns

  • If there are any concerns with regard to the installation or the operation of the wood stove contact a licensed professional in your area or contact a local building inspector.
